Description 1944: Second Front is a strategic game of the last year of World War II in western Europe. Beginning with the D-Day landings in June 1944, play unfolds as the Allies struggle first to establish a lodgment in Hitler's "Fortress Europe," then break out and race for the Rhine. The German player must seek to push the Allies back into the sea or, failing that, conduct a stubborn delaying action before launching his secretly prepared "Watch on the Rhine" counterattack.

Units represent battalions, regiments, brigades and divisions. Unit types include armor, assault artillery, mechanized infantry, paratroops, shock troops, heavy flak, security troops, commandos, bicycle-mounted infantry, etc. Map scale is 15 miles to the hex.

What makes this game different from all other simulations of the 1944-45 campaign is its emphasis on the elite units of both sides. They are the units that are mentioned time and again in the histories, spearheading attacks or saving the day when the rest of the defense is crumbling around them. Thus the key to victory for both players is their deployment and use of their elite formations. Exploring this unique design hypothesis is as entertaining as it is thought provoking.
