Charlie's Year is a 2-player operational game. You play as one of the royal contenders, with all of Scotland and England as your battleground.

You must decide when and where to commit resources, where to feint, and where to strike. Can you seize a critical fortress by coup de main, given that you have no siege guns? Battle joined, should you unleash the barbaric Highland Charge? What of the campaign as a whole? Is a descent on London feasible, or should you try for Newcastle, source of the Capital's coal supply? Or will a guerrilla campaign suit your purposes better? Above all, you MUST choose a course of action that brings you personal glory, whatever the final outcome.

The game is played in a series of turns, divided into a series of discrete "operations conducted by your mobile forces, using garrisoned fortifications as bases and pivot-points. As the seasons change, a variety of weather conditions will plague your decision-making. You have many sources of assistance, but their employment in this "sideshow" may ruin your chances of victory elsewhere and thus lose you the game. Besides, asking for help hurts your Prestige.

The primary focus is on the full campaign, but there are also shorter historical scenarios covering portions of the Rising. The campaign game itself is quite flexible, allowing you to experiment with different roads to victory. There is even a 1744 variant featuring a much larger French invasion force, led by the formidable Marechal de Saxe.
