Hazmo12 : FOREIGN LEGIONS

Corunna Road, Pozulo Sector, Spain, 3 December 1936 : Franco launches a three-pronged attack to take Madrid and end the war by Christmas. The Nationalists are confident of success, with Franco even boasting he will attend a celebratory mass in Madrid’s Catedral de la Almudena on Christmas Day. The Republicans, however, are determined to defend the Spanish capital at all costs.

Hazmo13 : TIN MEN IN TIANMEN

Tianmen, Hubei Province, China, 17 August 1945 : Following the Japanese surrender, Chiang Kai Shek urges the former occupation forces – along with the Chinese warlords who had served as their lackeys – not to surrender to the Communists but to instead resist the insurgency in the interest of “maintaining order.” The People’s Liberation Army, meanwhile, remains committed to either total victory or death.

Hazmo14 : A SISYPHEAN TASK

Hazmo15 : STICKS AND STONES

Irún, Spain, 11 August 1936 : On the final day of the battle of Irún, Asturian militia and miners – low on supplies and ammunition, yet grimly determined to hold off the nationalist assault – are reduced to throwing sticks of dynamite and volleys of rocks at the fascist insurgents.

Hazmo16 : L’INFERNO FASCISTA

Near Guadalajara (Madrid), Spain, March 8, 1937 : Led by Italian Gen. Mario Roatta, the fascist Corpo Truppe Voluntarie spearheads an assault on the northeast sector of Madrid with the aid of a terrifying new weapon : the L3 Lanciafiamme, a fast, flame-throwing tankette.

Hazmo17 : STACKIN’ ‘EM HIGH

Cuidad Universitaria, near Madrid, Spain, 19 November 1936 : Aware that they occupy the last obstacle separating Franco’s fascist troops from the capital city, the Republicans mount a determined defense of the City University with every tool at their disposal, even using heavy encyclopedias to construct makeshift parapets. Eager to regain the initiative, the High Command orders a counterattack.

Hazmo18 : GREEK TRAGEDY

Athens, Greece, 16 December 1944 : Following Churchill’s order to put down the communist insurgency in the Greek capital “with bloodshed, if necessary,” Gen. Scobie seizes the headquarters of the Greek Communist Party, setting off a bitter, month-long battle within the newly liberated city.

Hazmo19 : MAO’S FIFTH COLUMN

Shanghai, China, 25 May 1949 : In the climactic final act of the Battle of Shanghai, the Nationalists make a desperate last stand at the Main Post Office, the only building with line of sight to all four bridges spanning Suzhou Creek. Meanwhile, clandestine Maoist sympathizers within the Post Office wait for the right moment to do their part for the revolution.

Yellow Cliff Mountain, Shandong Province, China, 14 May 1947 : Chinese communist and nationalist troops face off in a race against time. Meanwhile, the fate of Chiang Kai Shek’s crack 74th Reorganized Division hangs in the balance.
